Tsunami
Tuesday, December 28th, 2004Yesterday the death toll was still around 23,000 when they talked about it on the news. Right before they cut to important coverage of the after x-mas sales. My brain can’t wrap itself around the juxteposition. And I keep thinking of how the US came to a halt, how everyone felt so devastated, how the whole world seemed to be concerned for us, after 9/11 and then I think “This is 14 times as many deaths. And millions of lives changed permanantly. And . . . ” And then the news moves on to AFTER X-MAS SALES?!?!?! That’s not even *news* when the whole world is quiet. And one of the morning shows still had their “Perfect Parenting” (perfect? as if!) segment, (advertised every five minutes for a full hour ahead of time) with 1/3 of the directions needed to teach your 3 mos old to scream themselves to sleep. “Good sleeping habits are best learned early!”, y’know . . . Remember when early was before age ten? Now it’s apparently 3 mos, and involves infants pulling themselves up by their bootstraps.
My disillusionment grows.
Anyway, the website for the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies is very busy, but donations are greatly appreciated.
